BLACK BOX HISTORY

In 1996, the blood, sweat, and tears of the CSUMB faculty, staff, and students transformed a temporary military building into the Black Box Cabaret. Guided by a student-created business plan, the BBC soon became the creative hub of the fledgling campus, showcasing both local and CSUMB talent.

In spring 2000, the BBC was shut down due to building code violations despite the fact that over 350 students and other members of the campus community rallied against this action, marching across campus, drums pounding and voices singing "Our Box! Our choice!"

Not willing to give up, students continued marching, this time to the ballot box. With 90 percent approval, they voted a $40 per year increase in student fees to fund renovation of the BBC building.

In summer 2001, renovation work began and four BBC student consultants were hired to create a new business plan for the BBC's reopening during the second half of the Fall 2001 semester.

The BBC reopened in February 2002, however, it was closed again just one day after its grand opening; its initial popularity backed up the plumbing and required repairs.

It reopened after about a week of closure, and since then, it has once again served CSUMB students as a hub of campus activity.
